Asphalt
What is Asphalt ?
Asphalt is derived from the French word ‘Asphalte’. It’s is an extremely poisonous substance used in mixing concrete. Asphalt can be found in sticky liquid or semi solid forms in crude petroleum products. Also known as Asphalt cement in polish and American term, the substance is defined as the refined remains of distilled crude oils.
It’s separated from other components of crude oil by simple distillation process under vacuum conditions. It’s called Bitumen in other countries. Asphalt is stored and transported at approximately 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Diesel oil or kerosene is mixed with Asphalt before it is shipped to retain the liquidity content.
The lighter oils are eventually separated on delivery. Asphalt is mixed with other ingredients such as stone chips and gravel to apply on road surface construction.
Asphalt Usage
Asphalt is used in building of roads. It acts as a binder for small stone chips used in constructions. It is a composite product used to make pavements, highways, drive-ways, pavements etc. It can be derived from other components on crude oil by simple distillation under vacuum atmosphere.
Asphalt’s early usage
Natural Asphalt deposits were used in Ancient Middle East for binding stones and bricks. It was also widely used in waterproofing structures and preserving mummies in Ancient Egypt. Statues of household deities were cast in Asphalt in Japan.
Modern usage
Roads in US are built in Asphalt since 19th century. Modern Asphalt is majorly utilized to build road surfaces. It’s heated for the purpose of softening the substance to use in construction. Customized heated tanker trucks are used to apply hot Asphalt on road surfaces.
The American Government insists on re-usage of Asphalt in creating new roads and establishments. Other uses of Asphalt include roofing shingles, cattle sprays, fence post and water proofing of fabrics.
Mastic Asphalt is a type of Modern Asphalt that has higher bitumen content. Asphalt emulsion is sprayed on road surfaces and cold mixed asphalt is used to create pavements.
The Installation process begins with applying a layer of stone or gravel on the target surface. Asphalt is then poured over the stone or gravel chips. Next is levelling the surface with a machine to ensure a smooth finish. After the completion of laying the substance, it’s left to cool off.
